8 Signs Of A One-Sided Relationship And How To End It

one way relationship

Have you ever been in a one-sided relationship, or are you currently in one? One-sided relationships have always ruined people’s lives because they always take advantage of them and leave them feeling broken, cheated, or used.

And when they finally dare to end things and eventually do, the next person sometimes pays for the sins of their predecessor because the victims think everyone is in a relationship with them to use or, better yet, take advantage of them.

However, love or romantic relationships do not represent any form of one-sidedness or even an ounce of selfishness.

But unfortunately, when a person has been involved in a one-sided relationship for a certain period, it some way has a way of messing with how they think.

Unfortunately, and sadly, many folks around us have been affected by this once or twice in their dating history. Besides, for some, it becomes a pattern.

What Is A One-Sided Relationship?

So are you investing more energy into your relationship than your partner is? Or does your partner wields more control than you? Perhaps you are more interested and committed to the relationship than your spouse.

Suppose the answer to all the questions is yes. In that case, it is suggestive that you are in a one-sided relationship with various imbalances being on display constantly, and a healthy or balanced relationship doesn’t contain all of those.

  • A one-sided relationship is only about one partner giving and giving.

In a healthy relationship, there is some natural give-and-take measure where both people involved don’t feel used or cheated on by the other person.

However, a one-sided relationship is only about one partner giving and giving.

At the same time, the other keeps on receiving and is not concerned about the other person’s needs not being met.

Unfortunately, it is safe to say that if you are currently experiencing this, you are in a one-sided relationship, and they don’t care about you in any way.

1.  Initiating A Vast Majority Of The Activities And Communication

Having to start a majority of the activities in your relationship is highly suggestive that you are in a one-sided relationship.

You may not like to hear this, but that is the truth.

Relationships and friendships are more enjoyed when both persons make the right effort to make it more fun by making moves to start things.

But in a situation where you are saddled with the sole responsibility of always initiating activities or when you finally get them on board, they act so cold.

It can be heartbreaking and even demoralizing for that partner.

Other times, there is little or no room for proper or adequate communication between both partners, and when one partner tries to engage the other, it feels like a tedious chore.

The writing is on the wall; you are in a one-sided relationship.

2.  Having To Make Most Major Relationship Decisions On Your Own

red flags of a one-sided relationship

Have you ever felt this way, “sometimes I feel like I don’t have a partner?” Unfortunately, that feeling can linger for months or even years for various reasons.

Any genuine love relationship looks nothing like a one-sided relationship.

So when most of the time, you are left to make serious decisions that concern your relationship with your partner alone, this is not a good sign that you are in a balanced relationship.

Or perhaps when you try to engage them in a conversation to get their opinion, they act incredibly casual and show you an unserious attitude toward the matter.

Sorry to break it to you, but that is part of the red flags of a one-sided relationship.

In other words, you are in a relationship with yourself because they seem not to be active.

As partners, you two should be able to discuss such issues together and give your opinions.

Besides, if you cherish your partner and relationship, you wouldn’t act irresponsibly.

So if you have to make the most significant decisions about your relationship on your own, you may want to start considering how to end things with them.

3.  Being The One Who Has To Apologize

one-sided relationship

Apologies keep relationships going because we are not all perfect, so when your partner’s imperfection gets in the way, and they say they are sorry, you should forgive them.

If you’re looking for ways to apologize to your girlfriend, our article on How To Apologize To Your Girlfriend will help.

But when you are always the one to apologize, even when they are wrong, that may be a one-way relationship.

Although, of course, sometimes, we can keep our egos aside and say we are sorry because we value what we share.

However, that shouldn’t be mistaken with what we are talking about here.

Have you ever been in a situation where your partner did something wrong in your absence, and when you showed up on the scene, they made you feel it was your fault for them messing up?

In worst cases, some may forcefully demand an apology from you, while others may instill the idea that you made them mess up and coerce you to apologize to them.

I don’t know which is worse, but none is healthy.

This happens in marriages, and if you’re in such a marriage, it has the characteristics to be called a one-sided marriage—my advice is to draw your spouse’s attention to the matter.

4.  Sacrificing Everything To Make The Other Person Happy

sometimes i feel like i don't have a partner

In every romantic relationship, there is always a place for sacrifice.

Because it is part of the things that keep many relationships going, but when it is one-sided, it will become burdensome.

On the other hand, you may see nothing wrong with it for a while because when people are in love, especially in the early stage of the relationship, they tend to go out of their way to make the other person happy.

After all, you may think you are sacrificing all because you love them, and you feel they would do the same for you if they were in your shoes.

Wait a minute! How long will you keep on doing that? Or do you think they will stop you from doing everything you do for them?

Listen, when a relationship is parasitic, the parasite wouldn’t want to leave because of what they benefit from the host.

So if you are constantly sacrificing everything to ensure your partner is happy and they are not doing the same for you, you are in a one-sided relationship.

5.  Imbalanced Financial Contributions

one sided marriage

Finances are integral to the success of any love relationship and could ruin things if not carefully handled.

That said when one partner is constantly making all the payments or buying stuff in the house, and the other isn’t contributing, that is not a healthy practice.

  • Finances are integral to the success of any love relationship.

Whatever happened to shared responsibilities? I feel our financial contributions should be made based on how much we earn.

But unfortunately, some partners don’t consider that when bringing their share. And sadly, some don’t bring it at all.

Interestingly, however you view things, finances are essential to the success of relationships, and if one partner doesn’t bring their quarter, how would things be?

Such things should be discussed, and proper amendments should be made for things to move smoothly.

But unfortunately, even after discussing these things, some spouses don’t change their attitude.

It’s different when one loses their job, and anyone could lose their job. In such instances, before they lost their job, they were never late on their contributions.

That unfortunate aspect of life could happen to anyone, which is understandable to some extent.

So, that may imply that some other type of arrangement would be in place instead of the older one. That way, you wouldn’t feel like you are in one-sided love.

6.  You’re The Only One Who Puts Work Into The Relationship

 one sided relationships

This is one of the classic signs of a one-sided relationship. When you love someone, you will ensure that you make an effort to see that you match their energy, or better yet, reciprocate the kind gesture.

Feeling like an option in a relationship is one of the worst ways to make someone feel.

But, if you love them, making them happy or smiling will be a part of your priority.

When you are committed to a love relationship, you will gladly do these things because it is what people who love each other do.

And they don’t go about making their partner feel like they have got a plan B somewhere else.

But when your spouse makes you feel like they are doing you a favor by being with you, then you might want to rethink things.

And trust me, they will show you in their behavior because the truth is, not everyone can pretend for too long.

So if they are constantly not honoring or respecting their relationship with you, that’s a sign.

7.  There Are More Negative Than Positive Emotions When You Think About Them

one sided love

Sometimes when you try to reflect on things in your quiet time, and you seem not to get positive feedback, it could mean something more profound than you ever thought.

For example, sometimes, we try to convince ourselves that a person we love is good for us despite all their shortcomings.

And don’t get me wrong, we all have those days, but when it happens daily, you might want to reevaluate things.

You are caught between your thoughts of moving on or sticking around to see if they will eventually change for the better.

But sadly, they do not end up changing. Instead, they become worse as the day goes by.

And what’s funny about such kinds of events is that you try to have more positive emotions than negative ones, but it just seems not to happen no matter how hard you try.

Chances are, you are in a one-sided relationship, and your heart is no longer willing to endure things.

So if you feel more negative emotions than positive ones, it is a sign your heart is no longer willing to carry on any further, and in times like that, the best thing is to move on so that your heart doesn’t become a factory of hatred.

Unfortunately, we often develop such feelings primarily because we were mistreated in the first place.

8.  You’re Not On The Same Page About The Important Things

This happens all the time in one-sided relationships because of mismatched priorities.

Moreover, it is mostly so because of selfish reasons, and one or both partners aren’t willing to let go of what they perceive to be essential for the relationship.

Sadly, relationships that suffer from this never seem to last long because the selfishness in one or both partners often grows bigger.

So if you seem unable to agree on what is best or vital for your relationship with your spouse because you are never on the same page, it is suggestive that you don’t understand each other, and there is a gap somewhere.

And this is part of the red flags of a one-sided relationship.

Are One-Sided Relationships Worth Fixing?

As always, I believe in the power of effective or good communication between spouses.

And if you both value what you share, the relationship you share will be bigger than the conflict.

And the drive to achieve that balance will be the driving force.

  • The relationship you share will be bigger than the conflict.
So yes, they can be worth fixing if both partners are willing to fix things and work through them again to arrive at the best solution.

How To End Things

What about after trying all we can and still did not get the desired result? In such a case, you may both need to go your separate ways, so it doesn’t result in something more devastating in the future.

  • Be Honest
To do that, you should be honest about how you feel and what you want. And the other person should do the same. This will help bring the truth. After all, we often tend to make others happy with lies rather than telling them the truth because we fear they may react negatively. Or it may break their heart, but it is always best to tell the truth and allow them to choose their fate.
  • Talk To A Therapist
Working with a therapist will help make things easier because they will help identify the best way to end things if you agree to go your separate ways.
  • Take Time To Recover
Rushing straight into another relationship isn’t the best thing to do immediately after coming out of a bad love relationship. So give yourself time to heal before getting out there because it will enable you to think and feel better.

One-sided relationships can be catastrophic, and it is best always to prioritize your mental health.
