Sharing is caring!

Today’s article will share some first-date tips to guide you on what you should and shouldn’t do. Meeting a person for a first date can be nerve-racking, and if not properly guided, you could ruin your chance of having them as your potential partner. The first impression is really what speaks about you, and the first few moments might prove to be the deciding moment of the date.

Creating a memorable first date isn’t difficult, but what is easier is messing up things by doing things that will drive them away.

Some people want to get that guy or girl you’re going on a first date with, so if you’re really into that person, it is only reasonable that you create an impact that will set you apart from the crowd.

The first date is a gateway to the second date, and that’s true. If I didn’t enjoy my first date with you, I would not like to see you for a second time.

Who knows, it might be even worse. I’ll be giving first date tips for guys and first date tips for girls. I wouldn’t like to leave anyone out.

So to ensure your chance of getting a second date with that person, put your effort into making your first date an outstanding one.

Lest I forget, the first date tips I will be sharing today will cost us nothing to implement. So, here are some first date tips you should consider.

1.  Suggest A Unique Date That Will Allow Some Time To Talk

Picking a place for the first date can be difficult. You could go to a place with a five-star rating, but it would be boring.

It doesn’t necessarily have to be expensive for a date to be unique. Unfortunately, many of us believe that it must be costly or cost much for a date to be excellent.

It could be simple yet classy. You could take that person to the most expensive restaurant in your city, and the entire experience wouldn’t be unique to them.

They’ve been there before, or you could still take them there, and a particular gesture of yours would make their time there different.

The difference could be that one act that you did has never been done for them before. Now, that’s unique.

A fantastic way to ensure you’ll be different from the others in the past that they had gone on dates with is to pick a perfect date that you know will set you apart and put it in front.

How would you know that unique date? Engage them in a conversation and trust your gut instinct. I’m not against going for dinner or going out to see a movie; common on guys, think outside the box for once.

You could ask your date to a painting class or an art show to see how good they are in that area.  If you are a music lover, invite your date to a record store to chat about music and let them tell you about theirs.

Let the activity chosen give you time to discuss. Remember, it’s just a suggestion, so if they are not excellent with your choice, ask them to bring theirs. Don’t feel bad if theirs is more incredible than yours, and it just has to do with what they like.

2.  Select An Activity You And Your Date Will Enjoy

Some people love being spontaneous. That’s cool too. However, if your spontaneity doesn’t appeal to them, you might not get a second chance.

Perhaps, if you get a second chance, plan for the date. Most people become stressed if they engage in an activity they do not fancy.

The activity you engage in is so important that it had to make its way into our first date tips. Am I sure you don’t want to be tagged as boring? So many times, we fail to realize that what we love doing isn’t what the next person will love to do.

The sole purpose of going out on a date with that person is to connect. So if the activity picked will hinder that, the goal is defeated. So choose one activity that both of you will find interesting or what will captivate both of you.

For instance, your date has a phobia for heights, and then because you find it fascinating, you surprise them with rock climbing. In your book of first date tips, shouldn’t the activity you and your date will embark on be fun and enjoyed?

Listen, it doesn’t matter how unique your date ideas are; if one of you doesn’t like it, then you shouldn’t consider it. It is that simple!

There is nothing wrong with you both mutually agreeing on what activity to engage in to save yourself and not ruin your chance of getting a second date. That way, both of you will be into it, which will smoothen things between you.

It takes only a few seconds to know if you’ll be seeing each other again, so make sure your date has as much fun as you do; that’s how to act on a first date, guys.

3.  Avoid Discussing Your Problems Or Flaws

Part of our first date tips will be for you to avoid certain things, at least just for the first date. We sure cannot go on a date and not discuss, but I’d like you not to tell your date about how crappy your boss is, what you hate about your appearance, or how loud you snore whenever you sleep.

While it may be fun to laugh at these flaws and problems, it may communicate something different to your date.

Conversations are crucial because the words you speak will give your date insight into who you are. So my word to you is to keep the conversation light and simple.

You should avoid making your date feel awkward or disinterested by talking about all the things that are going wrong in your life.

This is a major turn-off, and no one will want to have you as a partner. We all have issues going on in our lives, and if they didn’t bring up theirs, why should you bring yours up?

First date conversation tips; you should reflect a lot of positivity in your appeal and talk about the good things in life so that they would want the date to go longer. Also, be very cautious of whatever you choose to say.

You can tell when someone wants you to stay longer, and I hope you get that as you prepare for your date. All you are looking for is that single person who is a match, and that can happen at any time.

But it won’t happen any time soon if you don’t stop discussing your problems or flaws on your first date with them. Even if your car broke down earlier today or traffic was terrible, being overly negative on a first date can do more harm than good.

I’m not saying pretend to be someone you’re not, but you could still be yourself with a positive spin. That will serve you better than going down a negative path with a stranger.

4.  Create Conversations But Still Avoid Asking Too Many Questions

What to talk about on a first date with a guy can be somewhat tricky for some ladies. Guys are also not exempted from this category.

Nobody is against asking questions, but when the questions become too much, it is going to start to feel like an interview session between an employer and employee.

The most important tip to follow is not to over analyze or overthink things. Once, I had to rehearse my speech for a date, and boy, was it awkward.

I felt like a robot. Just go with the flow of the evening or day and do not act like a robot, please. Questions are a part of every conversation, and frankly, if you don’t ask relevant questions, how would you know if they are a perfect match for you.

I said that to acknowledge the fact that we need to ask questions. Yet, even in all of that, there has to be a balance in the conversation.

Of course, you will have to talk about yourself but avoid doing much of that. It’s a bad thing to do. if you alone do the talking, including the asking of questions and answering,

how do you know who they are? You have to make sure the other person talks as well. After all, they are entitled to that.

I had to put this on the list of first date tips because if you happen to be a talker, you can forget that this is a conversation involving two people and that the other involved might like to talk.

How to act on a first date is for both of you to talk, preferably, equally about yourselves. Allowing your date to talk about themselves will make them feel special, as though you care.

I’ve also noticed that people love talking about themselves. So ensure you engage them with beautiful topics, not those types that will cause arguments.

I love to understand the person I’m on a date with. Dates are supposed to be chances for you both to know more about each other before getting into a serious relationship. Remember that it’s a conversation, and it’s supposed to go both ways.

5.  Dress Appropriately And Mind Your Manners

Your appearance is vital, so part of my first date tips would be to dress appropriately, and you have to dress to impress because that is important. That statement can plunge many into confusion so let me explain better.

Some people might be under dressed, while others might get over-dressed. Funny, right? However, it is appropriate to dress slightly nicer.

I have had that feeling of confusion before, and I chose the wrong outfit. I’ve been there before! Well, I was lucky not to have gone out like that because someone advised me, and I listened and changed quickly.

You might want to look perfect for your date and try to impress them, and that’s cool. You know, the whole first impression thing has landed many in trouble.

The best thing to do would be to dress according to the event you are going to. Let me give an example to buttress my point. Imagine if you both are going for a picnic, and you are in a suit or high heels.

What is the best word to describe the scene? Awkward! That will be awkward for both of you. Wearing a suit is an excellent choice but not for picnics because to me you are overdressed for the occasion.

In other words, I’d like to say that you are out of place. The same thing goes for the lady wearing high heels to a picnic. If there is one thing it would do, that would be it will not impress your date.

Bad manners cannot hide, so if you have those, work on yourself before it drives your date away. It is easy to be rude without even knowing it.

And it would be best if you remember your table etiquette because it is all going to play a role in you getting another date.

6.  Compliment Your Date

Inclusive in our first date tips is for you to compliment your date. It is a nice thing to do, not just because everyone is doing it but because it’s going to make them feel good and comfortable.

They may even be a bit tensed due to the whole first date thing, but your ability to compliment them would help ease whatever burden they walked in with.

We all love to hear good things from someone, and hearing it from a person, we are on a date with will be very special. Are you thinking about what to talk about on a first date with a girl?

How about you start by saying, “lovely dress, and by the way, I love the color combination.” She’s going to respond, and from there, all you’ll do is go with the flow.

Perhaps, she was nervous while walking up to you. So what you did is a great way to put her in a good mood, and you’ve made the first step to start a conversation.

If they are wearing a brand you are familiar with, or you like, don’t hesitate to comment. “I see you are a fan of Gucci, too. That’s a wonderful choice.”

The secret is, if they are feeling good about the date already, then they will likely be feeling good about you and might be looking forward to a second date soon.

Moving on, it won’t be a bad thing if you send an invitation to connect and an expression of interest. Try to have a sense of humor, wittiness, and clever conversation, all in your flirting style, because they’re the essence of flirting.

So I’d like you to have these first date flirting tips on your sleeves. You could establish a connection right away and let your date know you are interested without saying it out loud.

Remember that it’s all in the eyes and as you compliment them, use this tool. Why is this essential? It is because it’s super intimate, and it makes a nonverbal statement to your date.

Also, try matching their energy with a little bit of laughing, smirking, subtle touching, and complimenting. All of those can go a long way and help you win a second date. Be careful not to touch your date inappropriately so you won’t convey the wrong message.

7.  Be A Good Listener

Listening is hot! Like any skill, listening takes time to hone and perfect. Chances are, if you don’t listen, most of your replies will be off, and that will be awkward.

To make the entire experience memorable, your listening skill should be at an all-time best. Listening to what your date has to say will show them that you are paying attention.

I would not like to be on a date with someone who is mentally distant from me. It is going to be demoralizing to find out that the entire time, you’ve been talking to yourself.

Occasionally, you could repeat parts of what they said back to them as a sign you’re with them. It’s going to make them feel heard. Moreover, making eye contact and nodding will be appreciated, too.

Being a good listener doesn’t necessarily mean that you allow them to do the whole talking. With time, you’ll get tired.

While listening, you could drop short comments or even ask questions about what is discussed. You could try completing their sentences from time to time.

Please, do not interrupt them, but instead, encourage them to speak. Listening will make you look like a friendly and observant person throughout your time together. So go ahead and hone your listening skills, and you will be glad you did.

8.  Put Your Phone Down

I know you are busy, but putting your phone down for some time won’t hurt you. It simply tells the person you are with that you value their presence.

We all have phones, and if I can put my aside to be with you, I see no reason you should be on your phone the whole time. Of course, emergencies could occur, but respect me and put it aside if it isn’t an emergency.

This carefree behavior has caused many to lose out on what would have been an excellent relationship. Listen, the first impression matters a lot, and you should know that by now.

Like I earlier said, unless it is necessary, don’t keep looking at your phone or be busy with it. It’s a turn-off if the other person is happening with their phone while on a date.

A good term to describe it is phubbing. It would be best if you gave them the attention that they have given you too. Reciprocity is key! So keep that phone aside.

I know in moments when there is this awkward silence, your only escape route will be to turn to your phone. You could pretend you have a dozen emails to attend to, but you know you don’t.

So no matter how uncomfortable it feels, never resort to pulling out your phone to fill in the gap created by silence.

The least you could do is take an hour’s break from social media, surf the web and text, and focus on the present. You are with a human being! In moments like this, bring out your inner genius.

You could ask questions like, “are you enjoying your time so far?” or “how often do you hang out with your friends?” to ensure you get rid of those awkward moments. Whatever you do, keep your phone in your pocket, and it’s a part of our first date tips to help you.

9.  Feel Confident

Confidence is probably the best thing to have on. Many folks seem to get tensed with the pressure building on the first date.

When your heart begins to race uncontrollably, it’s going to show in your actions. So the best way to control it all is to breathe and remind yourself that it’s just a date and not a meeting with your boss.

Be yourself and portray a confident you to your date, and being confident will draw your date to you automatically. Isn’t that what we want?

Another thing I’d like to point out is making a first great impression on your stature. It would help if you walked into the venue for your date with confidence and a smile.

The secret is that once you feel good about yourself, your personality, and your appearance, your date will automatically get to that same energy frequency. We have numerous first-date tips, but this is one you should make part of you.

10.  Don’t Talk About Past Relationships.

Even if you are thinking of what to talk about on a first date with someone you already know, past relationships shouldn’t be included.

The reason is quite simple; it is all in the past, so leave it there. So please resist the temptation and say no to its invitation.

Your date might not be comfortable discussing or hearing about your ex on a first date. So do ensure not to because it could leave your date with an impression that you still haven’t moved on yet.

When the date ends, tell them you’ve had a good time and thank them for spending time with you. I hope these first date tips are helpful.

If you are interested in going on another date, let them know right away. Perhaps, you might be lucky to hang out again together. Then, ensure to follow up by messaging or calling them. This will tell them you enjoyed your time with them.
