Can you ever stop loving someone Is it a question you must have thought about at one point or another in your life? Love is laced with both good times and bad times and as such some, not so good times will come with some amount of pain.
It feels great if the good times continue but that I can’t assure you of because people differ and have different motives for being in love.
Can you ever stop loving someone? Yes, you can, but it doesn’t mean it will be easy as emotions are involved. It also depends on what led to the fall out of love.
For example, were you heartbroken, or did you fall in love with someone out of reach? These and many more are things to consider.
I’ve been there. You may have been cheated on, lied to, or broken up with, yet loving that person is what hurts it all.
But you can’t just turn those feelings off like a switch easily; it will take some time before you eventually let go of your feelings for them.
When you have been with someone, regardless of the timing, even if it was for a short period, there must have been a certain kind of bond.
You have moved from being fond of them to getting involved emotionally too.
When hurt sets in, regardless of how much love you feel for them, you will feel bad not just because of the wrong that was done to you but because you love them; the pain will be twice as much as you would have felt if the hurt came from someone you are not emotionally connected to.
But the question is, can you ever stop loving someone?

Yes, your love for them can decrease and eventually fade out. Indeed, we may not be able to always control our feelings but we would not also keep falling victim of being used and hurt repeatedly, the heart is fragile also.
This is why sometimes we find ourselves stuck in the most unlikely relationships with people we shouldn’t be with.
This is why it’s not ideal to trust our feelings because we can be irrational sometimes and make hasty decisions because of our feelings.
Sometimes being in love can make us do things we ordinarily wouldn’t do and sometimes get us into situations that will hurt us too because sometimes we are really not in control, our feelings that cannot be trusted and have taken over situations.
We will be exploring a few possibilities that have to do with can you ever stop loving someone?
Before we go further, I’d like to let you know that you are not alone, you may be hurting now and on the verge of letting love go completely but can you read through before throwing the towel and possibly make a well-informed decision that you don’t regret later.
I’ve had people ask if it’s possible to let go of love completely, especially after a heartbreak. Amid the pain, you think it will last forever.
At this point, you tell yourself to stop loving the person so the pain can disappear, but it doesn’t work that way.
For some people, it’s quite easy to stop loving someone, while it’s a Herculean task for others.
Years later, some say they are still in love. So, can you ever stop loving someone? Or will the love always be there even when you have parted ways?
Can You Ever Stop Being With Someone Who Hurt You?

It is not easy to stop loving someone you have been with, it will take personal decisions and steps to put out love, and this is by no means easy; the hurt you feel may Increase before it eventually wears out.
As humans, we always love to cling to people we are familiar with and scared of being adventurous with.
Sometimes, we feel I have known this person long enough; where do I begin the search for another, and even if I do find someone, how long will it take for us to understand each other and bond.
And so we decide to stay in and just stick with the familiar; we don’t want change, we don’t want someone else, and this further disrupts the need to move on and keeps who has hurt us evergreen in our minds.
Even if you know that moving on is best for you, part of you clings to what you know.
This is why many people believe you can never stop loving someone. I’m not a fan of that belief system; love can grow and can also be stopped; it can begin and end too.
Some believe that whoever you have been with will always have a special place in your heart.
Possible and very true, but it doesn’t mean you will always love them the way you used to.
Even if they show up later in your life, when feelings get in the way, you can always nip it in the bud, especially where you were hurt deeply in time past.
A recurrence of hurt may happen and maybe worse this time
Ever heard of people ending a relationship and saying I just don’t feel like I used to feel before or I’m sorry, I don’t love you anymore? It further buttresses the fact that you can fall out of love.
You can be in love with someone, break up, and still love them but in a different way. Love can grow stronger and stronger.
And you can love someone less and less until you stop loving them. It is possible, no matter how hard it seems.
Can You Stop Loving Someone Overnight?

It can be very difficult to stop loving someone because it isn’t something you can force to happen. You can’t force yourself to stop loving someone and just let go.
You can distract yourself with other things and act like you’re over it, but love doesn’t just stop abruptly.
To stop loving someone isn’t a matter of desiring it or even making a decision to do so; it takes a whole lot more. Time is one big factor that needs to be considered.
How I Stopped Love In Its Track

This sounds catchy, I believe but follow my lead. I used to think that I could never fall out of love until I experienced it.
It began as heartbreak, and even though I was heartbroken for weeks and years, I looked forward to when my ex would come begging and asking that we mend fences.
We had a long talk at the point of breaking up, saying we both let go and wished each other the best.
I cried; I was pained and felt like I was going to die. I relieved the good times, the bad times, and the times we cried together, promising an unending love for each other. I’m glad I never died. I am here standing strong and happy.
Fast forward to 6months later, my ex came back on bended knees asking that we get back together.
Even though my feelings took a leap and almost jumped at it, my heart said no. I was yet to heal, but I told myself pain wasn’t my thing and I needed something better.
Somehow, I summoned up the courage to tell him it was over completely.
I left our meeting place feeling sad and cried a few tears, yet I had to tell myself the truth, it was over .
Now,I know you may be wondering if I had a genuine love for him. Yes, I did. I have realized that the longer the time spent together, the more difficult it was to let go.
I gave that relationship 9 years of my life. It took me over 9months to let go.
If nine months sound like a long time to you, you’re in for a big surprise. The stronger the love, the harder it can be to stop.
But, everyone has their capacity. Just because I could stop loving my ex after nine months doesn’t mean it will be the same for you. It could be more or less.
What played a major role in my letting go, aside from the no contact rule or a few things, was time.
When you’ve been away from someone, it is easier to forget them, especially when you don’t see them or speak to them. You get occupied with other things.
This is why stopping loving a colleague, classmate, or even someone who stays in your environment can be very difficult.
When there is a separation, Instead of seeing them daily, you talk less, and the feelings will gradually fade. This also happens after a heartbreak; you just realize you have gotten over them.
Before you realize it, you just discover you have stopped loving them.
Can You Unlove Someone You Once Loved? (10)
Have you taken stock of your current relationship or even your relationship that just ended? Have you weighed the good and bad times to see which is more?
Perhaps you are tired of your relationship, there are a few ways you can gently begin to fall out of love with your partner.
We will be exploring some ways to help you fall out of love.
1. Face Reality

You are the only one who can tell yourself the truth. Even though it will hurt, you will heal. The first step in the move of stopping love is to tell yourself the truth about the status of your relationship.
Facing reality may never be easy to do. Are you the one shouldering responsibilities in the relationship, or is your partner indifferent towards your needs? Face it headlong and tell yourself the truth.
Understanding how their behaviors affect you can be an important first step to getting over your feelings.
Being honest with yourself will not automatically turn off your affection for them, but it can help you gain some perspective about your relationship.
With this new perspective, your intense feelings of love for them may begin to lessen over time.
2. Analyze Your Feelings
Regardless of the number of years, you have been together, being in love will impact whatever you do.
It’s important to enjoy the good times, what your partner meant to you, how important the relationship was in your life, and what you hoped to achieve with your partner.
Have you both been able to achieve what you hoped to do together? When you can do that, take a step back to recognize how the relationship no longer fits your purpose or produces the same joy it once did.
3. Accept Your Analysis

There’s no need to second guess yourself after thoroughly looking at your relationship.
Permit yourself to accept that regardless of these truths, it remains difficult to let go. It will not always be easy to let go, but being honest with yourself every step of the way can help with easing the process.
You must not take action immediately until you are sure you are cool with your discovery.
4. Talk To Someone
Dealing with something as difficult as the end of a relationship can make you want to retreat into a dark corner all by yourself. However, this may not always be the best option.
Reaching out to your friends and family, updating them of your choice and how difficult it is, can help to reduce the burden.
In turn, your loved ones will offer support through your trying times. They may also exchange tips and ideas that helped to get them through periods where they made the same decision.
When you don’t feel up to it, you can speak to a professional; they can help analyze your decision and help you see blind spots clearly.
5. Realize That It Will Take Sometime

Getting over someone you love may not always be easy, but you don’t have to complicate issues by thinking it will happen overnight. Time will always take its course.
The only way to get over your feelings is to work through them, and that usually takes some time since it’s not magic. Days have to roll over into months and possibly years
Giving yourself time to go through hurt and pain will eventually be worth it. There’s no use putting a bandage over a wound too quickly when it’s not time; allow time to take its place.
6. Get To Work
There’s no use for the steps above if you are going to let it go to waste. You need to take steps and bring it to reality
7. Don’t Lose It

The thought of getting over your feelings and moving on to the next phase of your life can seem like a herculean task. However, time is a great healer and holds a lot of promise for you and your future.
8. Allow Yourself The Grief
It’s alright to mourn the loss of your relationship, don’t let the pain of today hold back your promised future. What is ahead of you is much more compared to what you are going through.
When you decide to stop loving someone, the first thing to acknowledge is the strength it took to agree with removing yourself from a situation that no longer makes you happy.
9. Be Civil With Your Words

Have a dialogue with your partner on your experiences and hear them out. Paint all possible scenarios that led to the point you are in.
10. Stay Away Completely
Staying away from someone that once meant the world to you can be hard, and it’s the most dreadful stage of moving on and learning to unlove a person.
In as much as it hurts, it is the wisest thing to do, and that is the fastest way to get yourself together and move on.
Look Into The Future With Hope

Falling out of love isn’t easy, and many things make it a truly challenging process.
But being honest with yourself, focusing on your feelings, speaking with others, and getting yourself psyched for the future can help in easing the process.
There’s love lurking everywhere, and while it may seem a little dreary right now, there’s always a shot at happiness around the corner.
Going forward, You can look at your relationship and your ex separately. Then, you can look back at what it was like while you were together.
You can look back at what you learned from it rather than thinking about the missing person in the picture, which is your ex
When you meet someone new and share your past, you don’t talk about your ex but what you went through.
You speak of what you learned, what you experience, how it changed you, rather than complaining about your ex.
The time you took to stop loving someone and move on is what gives you that clarity and ability to love again. That growth and time give you perspective. You learn that not all love is forever.
