20 Steps To Stop Thinking About Someone You Like But Can’t Have

Sharing is caring!

Sometimes we want to know how to stop thinking about someone we love but cannot have because of the pain.

We go through unimaginable pain, and most of it comes from staring at someone you love but cannot have.

There are very few things in life that can torture you like this.

Most of us would not feel so much pain if we didn’t love the person. But loving the person and not having them by your side is a huge blow.

I know what it means to be in this situation because I have been there before. So in today’s article, I will be sharing some steps about how to stop thinking about someone you love but cannot have because of life circumstances.

I also hope to share significant ways to distract yourself from thinking about someone. Let’s get started!

1.  Make Up Your Mind

You might even ask, “what does that mean anyway?” It simply means it is time to decide what is best for you.

So many of us have this notion of picking what makes us happy over what is best for us.

But, unfortunately, sometimes in life, what is best for us isn’t always going to make us happy.

Our happiness may be short-lived, but what is best for us will last longer in the long run.

Also, what is best isn’t always an easy choice. For instance, studying for a test all night or sleeping all night, which would you prefer naturally? My guess is as good as yours.

So if you want to know how to stop thinking about someone you love but can’t have, make up your mind and decide that your peace is a top priority.

2.  Don’t Feign Memory Loss

Don’t deny that it never happened. Don’t deny your emotions or deny how or what you feel.

We are humans, and part of our makeup is our emotions. When such things happen, our first reaction is to deny feeling something. Self-denial is the highest form of deceit.

So go through the pain, and confront your feelings but don’t dwell there, nor should you build a monument around them. Once you do this, you will be close to recovery. And that’s how to stop thinking about someone.

3.  Don’t Talk To Them For A While

This is one of the best things you would be doing for yourself. Why stay close to the barbershop if you don’t want to have a haircut?

We all know that if you hang around close enough to the barbershop, you might get a haircut sooner or later. Don’t say,

“I am trying to stop any form of communication with that person,” and still call, text, or even go to their house.

How did feelings grow between you two? Feelings grow primarily via constant communication; if you want your emotions to die, slowly stop communicating with them. Now that’s how to stop thinking about someone you love but can’t have.

4.  Find Someone Else To Think About

It may not be easy as ABC, but you can always try. We never know what we are capable of doing except we try.

I am not saying to start another relationship immediately, but permit yourself to feel something for another person again.

Broken hearts can become brand new, which is what faith can do. Look around, and you will get to see someone else.

5.  Don’t Try To Bump Into Them

Start with this one if you ever want to do yourself any favours. Avoid bumping into them at all times.

This could be very easy unless you deliberately want to see them. Well, that might be because some of you miss them and wish to see them.

So we will feel that way but remember, you will be doing yourself a favour.

It’s like opening a wound that has healed each time you set your eyes on them.

You will remember that you cannot have them, and your heart will be pained. So if you are thinking about how to stop thinking about someone, try not bumping into them.

6.  Don’t Slip Into Misery

One of the easiest things to do is not to try at all. If you don’t fight yourself, who will do that for you? Most of our battles are inner ones. It is easier to slip into misery than to fight to stay alive.

Without care, we might begin to adapt to great physical or mental distress or discomfort.

If you ever get to this stage, you need help.

Stay connected to the happy side of life, watch funny videos, remember the good times of your life, and hopefully, you will be fine. That’s how to stop thinking about someone.

7.  Don’t Stay Idle

Do you know what they say about idleness? It hinders productivity, and I am sure that you want to be productive.

However, if you stay all day long without engaging yourself in something exciting or practical, you might slip back into what you are trying hard to avoid. So, at all costs, avoid staying idle.

8.  Don’t Stalk Them, Offline Or Online

You could feel that it was coming. It wasn’t a matter of “if” but “when.” So here we are on this much important point.

We live in a world where we can easily keep tabs on other people because of the advancement of technology. If you cherish your peace, don’t even try to stalk them.

Is the feeling going to come? Yes, it certainly would, but you have got to be in control of your emotions and not your emotions in charge of you.

If you are looking for a means of how to stop thinking about someone, this could help.

9.  Respect Yourself

One of the best things you can do for yourself if you ever find yourself in this situation is to respect yourself.

Although, some might ask, “what does that even mean anyway?” Many times when we are in love and feel pain, we might temporarily lose our ability to think straight.

That is because we often allow our emotions to take the wheel.

If that person treated you wrongly, why would you still want to have them in your life? Self-respect means holding yourself in esteem and believing that you are excellent and worthy of being treated well.

For example, self-respect is when you know you deserve to be treated right, and, as a result, you do not tolerate others lying to you or mistreating you.

10.  Learn A New Activity

If you are still looking for how to stop thinking of an ex, the best way to do this is to engage your mind in healthy or fun things.

Most of the crucial battle is getting the mind to a happy place and engaging it in a new activity. Whatever those activities are, they will help in your journey to forget who that person is.

11.  Spend Time With Friends

Someone once said, “good friends are like stars. You don’t always see them, but you know they are always there.”

So if you were distant, now is the best time to reconnect with your friends. There is nothing a good conversation with friends cannot solve.

In the multitude of good friends, there is wisdom. You’ll see that too because they will take every step with you.

So if you want to know how to not think about someone, try spending some time with your friends

12.  Don’t Criticize Yourself

Self-criticism, in this case, won’t do much to help you. So instead of doing that, learn from the situation and move on. What has happened has happened and can’t be changed.

But how I view things is that you can change how things look in the next chapter of your life.

But if you are stuck in the previous chapter, criticizing yourself, you will never know what the next chapter could be like.

13.  Accept The Fact That They Have Moved

One of the most challenging things to do in Life is to admit the reality staring in front of us. Deep down, many people always struggle with the truth.

And what is that truth; they have moved on. So if you want to know how to get someone out of your head, kindly remind yourself that they have moved on.

And it will only be wise if you do the same to save yourself from more heartaches.

14.  Avoid Talking About Them

You can’t win if you constantly talk about them with your friends. However, they will still occupy a place in your mind, so if you want to stop thinking about them, bring up different topics that will enable you to forget about them.

I know it can be difficult, especially if you love them dearly, but with a conscious effort from you, you will be doing what you love doing in no time.

Repeating the same story constantly will only make matters worse; that way, you won’t get them off your mind.

15.  Remove Any Memories Of Them

I know you must have been waiting for this particular point, so here is it. Our memories are powerful because it stores many things for us.

However, you could start by returning their stuff to them. The less you see their items all over your space, the better for your mind.

So those items might be clothes, perfumes, toothbrushes or even shoes. The best thing to do is put them in a box and deliver them to their house.

So if you ask me how to get someone out of your head? My response will be, get their things out of your physical space, and subsequently, your mind will start to forget about them.

16.  Work On Your Flaws

This is not the time to beat yourself up and slip into misery. Instead, seize the moment and work on your flaws to be a better person. Like I stated earlier, learn your lessons and move on because you might need them soon.

Unfortunately for many folks, instead of working on themselves, they end up being self-critical and sabotaging the entire process because of a moment. Don’t let your situations define you!

17.  Find Yourself

Have you heard of stories where people went through hell on earth, but amid that ugly situation, they found themselves? Yours can be just like like that too.

Ask the right questions. Seek the correct answers from within you, and at that moment, you will find who you are supposed to be.

Perhaps you have been so occupied that you forgot to do what you love most. Reconnect with yourself to bring back your smile to your face.

So when someone walks up to you and asks, how do you stop thinking about someone? Let them know that the best way is to find themselves.

18. Don’t Hope For A Second Chance

Hope is a four-letter word, but so is hurt. So maybe this one isn’t meant to be, and the earlier you get this, the better for you.

However, they might come back with the usual lines of how they miss you and haven’t been the same since you left.

We might reconsider taking them back but think of the pain you endured the last time and do what is best.

19.  Give It Time

In all we do, we should learn to give time its role. But this is the hardest part of learning how to not think about someone because you will do so in the early stages.

So do you give up and continue thinking about them? Certainly not! Challenge yourself to do better, and eventually, you surely will.

20.  Forgive Them For Hurting You

What’s done is done, but for your peace, you must forgive them and let it all go. You won’t make progress without forgiving them.

However, you might pretend to have, but if you truly haven’t, your peace won’t be complete.

These steps will help you immensely if you follow through. Remember, how to take your mind off someone isn’t going to happen overnight. But with baby steps, soon, you will be whole again.
