Best TED Talks About Marriage

Sharing is caring!

marriage talks

We all talk about marriage for different reasons, and some are actually worth hearing – I mean, the talks are worth your time.

And if you pay close attention, you will learn many things from that session. But unfortunately, not everyone is saddled with that responsibility.

And we can’t deny that we do not talk about marriage in our little groups, whether in a church, bar, park, office or other places.

So, no matter what part of your life you want to learn more about or develop, there’s a TED talk to help you get there.

And today, we will focus on the talk about marriage and what you call romantic relationships.

So, if we talk about marriage so much in different places and with other people, sometimes even with strangers, it is only reasonable to say that it is a vital subject that concerns many of us.

And as such, we should listen to people with a proven track record or who are professionals in that area of life.

I have learned a few things in life, one of which is that talk is cheap, and the other is that because you have something to say doesn’t mean you will have an audience to listen to you and doesn’t mean you will give out good advice.

Well, if you are looking for something worth your time and energy, these Ted talks on relationships will help you.

1.  The Power Of Vulnerability – Brené Brown

about marrige

In my opinion, this is one of the best TED talks about relationships I have watched, especially in the area of being vulnerable in the face of love.

And there are so many other things to learn from it. Brené challenges her audience’s thoughts on vulnerability, what it means for us, what it is, and how we can use it in our lives for the benefit of our relationships and us.

So, what’s being in love without being vulnerable? Many people want to fall in love but do not want to be vulnerable in the face of love.

So if I may ask, what has vulnerability got to do with your love life? It has everything to do with it because most of us want to live in a fantasy and avoid reality.

  • So, what’s being in love without being vulnerable?

The truth is many people want to experience a deep connection with their partner but still hold back.

And when you ask them why they have no reasonable answer.

But deeply rooted in their hearts is the fear of being vulnerable to the one they claim to love.

They fear that their weakness will be used against them by their partners.

Other times, past experience also plays a role in people refusing to show that side to their partner.

It will amaze you that many of us are in this category.

True love casts out fear, and that has been proven time and time again.

But however this might sound, you should know that vulnerability encourages the most genuine version of yourself to come to the forefront.

And if that means letting your guard down to connect in a raw and open manner, you should embrace it.

2.  3 Ways To Build A Happy Marriage And Avoid Divorce – By George Blair-West

Dr. George Blair-West is an author, researcher, and psychiatrist who delivered a captivating talk that all married couples should watch and pay attention to because there are many things that he said would benefit their relationship in this talk.

In this TED talk about marriage, he shares the three things he believes are vital in building happy marriages and avoiding divorce.

I have heard different marriage talks, and one thing married couples dislike because of how excruciating or traumatic it is is divorce.

Nobody genuinely gets married to the love of their life and then hides the desire to get a divorce later in the future somewhere hidden in their hearts, perhaps especially when kids are involved.

The truth is that divorce is a messy thing that can disrupt one’s life if not prevented. So, it brings me to the old saying; prevention is better than cure.

However, that means it’s easier to stop something from happening in the first place than to repair the damage after it has happened.

And the truth is, many homes still haven’t healed from the crack this has created.

Many things could lead to a divorce, but the divorce itself is not the problem.

Instead, it is the result of something left unattended to initially.

Other times, the things we predict that could lead to a divorce might not be what you thought they were.

So, the bottom line is, try your best to avoid divorce instead of trying to fix your marriage once the cracks are already beginning to show.

Unfortunately, the talk about marriage is profound.

3.  A Better Way To Talk About Love – By Mandy Len Catron

 ted talk ideas

Mandy Len Catron is a writer who writes about love and love stories at The Love Story Project.

And in her relationship TED talk, she does a fantastic job explaining some vital things about our love lives.

And I honestly think many deserve to take a listen to the things she said.

The love lives of many have had many issues for a period, and some might have even given up on love itself.

However, maybe in the past, the information they have about the subject hasn’t been of any help in their present situation.

So, they feel it is useless to talk or even believe in love again. But, giving up won’t solve the issue.

Instead, dig deeper until you find the right knowledge that you need. Then, that will be the right thing to do.

I can’t stop you from feeling what you are feeling, but I must tell you that there is a solution to what you are going through.

How we see something with our minds determines how we’d approach it.

Besides, a shift in how we talk about and frame our love lives could lead to more collaborative and perhaps less stressful outcomes or events between our spouses and us.

4.  4 Habits Of All Successful Relationships – By Dr. Andrea And Jonathan Taylor-Cummings

When we talk about marriage, especially ours, we’d always like to describe our relationship with our spouse as successful, even if we left home and are not on speaking terms with them.

But it doesn’t matter; that is what most of us think because we all want to present our relationships as a success to the world.

But we fail to realize that it takes more than wishing to get the job done.

Other times, we want our marriages to automatically become successful without putting in the required work from our spouses and us.

However, no history has ever recorded that such an attitude produced a perfect marriage or relationship.

  • All successful relationships display a particular pattern.

Well, in this talk on relationships delivered by Dr. Andrea and Jonathan-Cummings, they said that they have observed that all successful relationships display a particular pattern.

That means that successful relationships show the same four simple and fundamental habits.

Success can be replicated anywhere once the defined parameters are in place. Then, all you need to do is follow through and watch how things will fall in place.

But, first, both spouses must be willing to do what is required for their relationship to work fine.

Am I saying there won’t be issues? Certainly not, because all relationships face a similar set of hurdles.

But what we need is to be equipped to overcome. That is the only way our relationship will survive the storms that come with life.

5.  Skills For Healthy Romantic Relationships – By Joanne Davila

ted talks on relationships

When it comes to marriage, very few people invest their time or energy in wanting to know more about it before they walk down the aisle.

Others try a bit to learn more when they are already in it. Better late than never, I guess. In any case, knowledge has always been a vital instrument for success.

  • When it comes to marriage, very few people invest their time or energy in wanting to know more about it before they walk down the aisle.

No one teaches people in schools how to get the right skills for healthy relationships.

But we teach many people how to get skillful in other areas of life, and they succeed in those areas.

Isn’t that one good reason why many romantic relationships are suffering today? Yet, we don’t want to change our style to get a different result.

Everything in life can be learned if we put our hearts to it.

So many people look to fix their relationships with therapy and then have a healthy relationship, but it could be too late.

So instead, we must learn how to have a healthy relationship right from the start because it will always save us a lot of stress.

And this is a talk that gives you different ideas on how to get a healthy relationship and avoid an unhealthy one.

Also, it is an excellent topic to talk to your partner about. Relationships TED talks are educative, and I advise you to watch this one.

So, in her own words, let’s end this point. “We may know what a healthy relationship looks like, but most people have no idea how to get one, and no one teaches us how to do so.

We need to teach people how to have healthy relationships.” I couldn’t agree more.

6.  Falling Is The Easy Part – By Mandy Len Catron

This is another powerful talk about marriage and romantic relationships by Mandy Len Catron.

She is no stranger on the list if you have read through it up until now.

If we are honest with ourselves, many will confess that it is effortless to fall in love with someone.

However, staying in love with that person is the more challenging part of the equation.

If you have ever been in love with someone before, and you have stayed for a while with them, then you will testify that what I just said is the truth.

It is valid for several reasons, and I will share a few with us.

Relationships sometimes start all too easy, and we feel that warm sensation we interpret as love whenever we hang out with our spouses.

And that is fantastic, but as time goes by and we begin to see our partner’s flaws or human imperfections display themselves in different ways, our love for them might start to reduce.

So, at that point, we begin to ask ourselves many questions about how we started, and perhaps what we felt initially wasn’t love, or maybe we rushed into it without properly knowing them – you know, those questions that bring doubt into our minds.

In moments like this, it isn’t easy to continue loving them with the same energy you initially did.

  • It only takes a few minutes to fall in love, but it takes almost a lifetime to stay in love.

If you have stayed long enough in a relationship, you must have passed through this at one point.

And to make matters worse, other strangers will start looking attractive in your eyes, and for some reason, in that time, they will have all that you have ever wanted in a spouse.

So, you will know that the challenging part is not falling in love but staying in love with your spouse.

It only takes a few minutes to fall in love, but it takes almost a lifetime to stay in love.

Sadly, many people want to fall in love but don’t want to work to stay in love.

We must understand that falling in love is different from staying in love.

You might be able to fall in love quickly, but staying in love is scary, terrifying, and takes a conscious choice.

It is beyond your feelings because your feelings could fluctuate or waver, so it must be a conscious choice you make every day you wake up to your partner.

So, the next time you talk about marriage to someone, tell them about this too.

This TED talk is an excellent conversation starter to talk with your spouse about your thoughts on love, whether you feel it’s enough, and how you can choose to stay in love daily. And, of course, it is one of my best talks.

7.  Rethinking Infidelity – A Talk For Anyone Who Has Ever Loved – By Esther Perel

ted talks about relationships

Perhaps this is one of the scariest topics to discuss with your spouse.

But, trust me, if your partner initiated the conversation, many questions might flood your mind.

For example, are they planning on cheating on me? Why is he interested in this topic now? Or does he think I will cheat on him? Does she still find me attractive enough? I am out of shape now, and his eyes are beginning to look outside, so what must I do? These might be some of the thoughts that may come to your mind.

One fear most married folks have is the fear of cheating on their spouse or being cheated on.

Whatever side you are on, you should rethink the topic of infidelity.

By the way, let your minds not wander far because never will I endorse infidelity for any reason.

So, why do people cheat? Some say men cheat more, while others argue that women cheat better.

However, this is not to create any form of a debate between both genders but to ask, why do people cheat even when they say they have found the love of their life?

Others say they cheat out of boredom and feel guilty afterward. Finally, some say they cheat out of loneliness and a hunger for intimacy.

So when we say they cheated on me, was it a text you saw, a massage with a happy ending with a massage therapist, a one-night stand, a hook-up with a random stranger, or even with your best friend? And will that affair lead to the end of the relationship?

In any case, cheating is wrong, and no matter how we try to justify our actions because of the situation we find ourselves in, remember that you made a vow to your partner.

The least you could have done was run from anything that would jeopardize your relationship with your spouse.

Is infidelity a topic you haven’t spoken to your partner about yet? I don’t think talking about it with your significant other is wrong.

So talk deeply about it, unpack your thoughts, and discuss it with your partner. Moreover, you can’t talk about marriage and not talk about cheating.

Besides, it’s an exciting topic to discuss, and this talk will challenge how you think about it.

8.  The Difference Between Healthy Love And Unhealthy Love – By Katie Hood

Many people in our world today have experienced both healthy and unhealthy love.

But unfortunately, some of them still don’t know the difference between both, which breaks my heart.

Furthermore, some adapt to hostile conditions created by the atmosphere of unhealthy love and justify why they still choose to stick around.

And when they finally realize that all the while, they have been in a toxic relationship all along, they feel more damaged.

However, they carry a lot of baggage with them, and eventually, when they feel any form of healthy love, it feels weird to them.

Other times, they may even attempt to resist any form of healthy love shown to them because of the trauma in their previous relationship.

Someone once said that too many people are building others up for the next person they will be with while damaging you for the next person that will come into your life. And that is true.

But of course, there are differences between healthy and unhealthy love.

Katie Hood shares some red flag behaviors in this TED talk relationship that constitute “unhealthy love.”

Furthermore, she explains how to identify when these behaviors are present in your relationship or marriage.

In addition, she also outlines what healthy love should feel and look like, giving us a better understanding of how to be the best selves in our romantic or love relationships.

9.  What You Don’t Know About Marriage – By Jenna McCarthy

 ted talks relationships

Countless times I have said that we can’t rule out the place of knowledge if we want to have a successful marriage relationship with our spouse.

However, as vital as that sounds, there is another tool that we must have with us as we move.

Have you heard of wisdom? Oh yes, that tool I spoke of earlier on is wisdom.

  • Knowledge gives you an advantage, but application gives you results.

Knowledge gives you an advantage, but application gives you results, which is wisdom.

But if you don’t have the necessary knowledge, how or what would you think of applying? When it comes to marriage, successful marriages don’t happen by chance, and it comes as a product of what you know, understand and how you apply what you know and have understood for your relationship to stand the test of time.

In this talk about marriage, Jenna McCarthy shares research about what the longest, happiest, strongest, and healthiest marriage relationships have in common and how you can adopt those traits for your relationship. You’d be surprised by her findings.
