In today’s article, we shall discuss vital and fun things to talk about in a relationship. As you know, there are other types of relationships, such as family relationships, friendships, work relationships, situational relationships, which are sometimes called situationship, and then, we have romantic relationships.

However, my area of focus will be primarily on romantic relationships. Often, we may find that several romantic relationships lack one of the most integral things needed for survival.

And when you see such types of relationships, you’d be tempted to ask, how is it you two even met in the first place? Yet, for people to stay together in a relationship, there must be somewhat of a connection. And the degree to which that union blossoms is directly related to how much rapport they have with each other.

Unfortunately, some other people find themselves slipping into a zone of complacency. This is often because of how long they might have been with each other, and they feel there is nothing to know about their partner.

And then they stop connecting with their partner. In other words, they allow over-familiarity to rob them of having a fantastic connection. So, no matter how long you have been with each other, be aware of the danger of over-familiarity. So, on that note, I would like to share some fantastic things to talk about in a relationship.

1.  Money

This may not be a romantic topic, but it is one of the serious things to talk about with your boyfriend or girlfriend, especially if you plan to settle down with them and start a family.

Financial topics are vital in all areas of life, including romantic relationships, because we live in a world where we use our money to buy things necessary for living. For example, you need money to buy or rent a house, food, clothes, etc.

It never stops amazing me when I see couples avoid the money talk. So, in such an instance, I ask, how do you intend to get married and raise kids if you don’t have a financial chat now? Many choose to avoid it because they feel it is a sensitive topic, and they are right.

But, they are also wrong to avoid it, and here is the reason: just because it is a sensitive topic doesn’t mean it shouldn’t or can’t be addressed. Interestingly, in such a case, because of how sensitive it is, that should be the more reason why you should want to address it.

I understand that money is so personal to some people for different reasons, but it is never advisable not to talk about that with your partner. However, it is quite unfortunate that one of the leading causes of divorce is mainly financial. Therefore, discussing this is essential so that you know your partner’s money habits.

Having such information will help you understand what you are getting into and the necessary structure needed to be put in place to ensure better money habits are learned and negative ones are adequately addressed.

Finally, on this point, it may not be an easy one to discuss or implement what is needed, but it is worth trying because it will save you unnecessary stress as you continue in the relationship. So, this is one of the vital things to talk about in a relationship.

2.  Your Daily Activities

This might not be as important a topic discussed as money, but if discarded from your relationship might have a negative impact. How else are you expected to connect without discussing how your day went with your spouse? It is such moments that lead up to other romantic chatting topics.

But if neglected, such a couple could be starving themselves of what a healthy union should be. So, one thing to discuss in a relationship with your partner is each other’s daily activities. So, if you are searching for one of the best romantic topics to talk with your boyfriend or girlfriend, why not start with your daily activities?

For some couples, this is one of the best times to bond with their significant other. And the reason is they enjoy each other’s company as they share highlights of their daily activities. It also helps them unpack some unhealthy emotions because of what someone did to them at work or elsewhere. In such cases, their significant other will listen and help them work through their feelings until they get better.

There are several beneficial reasons why it is good to discuss how you spent your day with your partner. One of the hallmarks of a healthy relationship is how well you communicate and connect with your spouse. So, don’t take any moment for granted because it might just be what your relationship needs to flourish.

3.  Individual Goals

If you are probably thinking about what to discuss with your partner while you enjoy the warmth your significant other gives you, discussing personal goals isn’t such a bad idea. So what’s life without goals? I believe they give us reasons to want to push further so we can accomplish them. So, why not share some of them with your significant other as they come to your mind? This will give you both an opportunity to bond.

Just because a goal is personal doesn’t mean it can’t be shared. Moreover, your significant other isn’t a stranger to you, so you should feel free to share your goals with them. But remember, we are discussing things to talk about in a relationship.  So, if you cannot share these things with your spouse, with whom would you share them? And if that is the case, that suggests your connection isn’t entirely healthy.

An amazing partner will assist you, which can only be possible when you share your goals with them. However, the truth remains that no one can do it alone. So, that implies that we might need help at some point, and what better person to help us than our spouse.

4.  Goals To Address as a Couple

This is another interesting topic to consider if you are thinking about what things to talk about in a relationship. Couple goals may vary as you move from one couple to another.

For example, if we put five couples in a room and asked them privately about their goals, their answers would completely differ. So that means every couple has a specific goal, making it a more exciting topic to chat with your boyfriend about.

Life is in phases and seasons, and with each of those seasons or phases comes different goals. Of course, this is true for individuals and even for couples, too. And most times, in romantic relationships, the couple’s goals are usually a hybrid. So, it is always vital to come together and brainstorm what goals you two hope to achieve as a couple.

Interestingly, it would help if you remembered that all healthy relationships should include shared goals for the future. And talking about this will bring you closer and help you work as a team to achieve those goals. So, discuss the goals you plan to achieve together as a couple because it is part of the things to talk about in a relationship.

5.  Your Feelings

This is one aspect of our nature we cannot escape from, and the reason isn’t far-fetched. Shockingly, our feelings can affect us negatively and positively, significantly affecting our relationship with our spouse. And this is why it is a vital topic to discuss with your partner. So, if you are thinking of things to talk about, well, I just suggested one for you.

It may not be one of those romantic topics to talk about with your boyfriend over text, but it shouldn’t be one you avoid entirely. Listen, every romantic relationship that has lasted the test of time wasn’t without challenges.

Of course, days will come that will test everything you stand for, and in such moments, if you let your emotions get the better of you, you might not recover quickly from the outcome of things. Similarly, whenever we allow our negative feelings to take the wheel, the results are bound to be far from pleasant.

So, discuss these things with your partner because this is one of the ways they can get to know you better. And where they need to support you to get over a negative feeling, they can do so promptly. Remember, there should be openness and no room for shame when discussing such important matters with your partner. So, if you are struggling with any negative feelings, let them know.

We encourage such discussions between couples because it is essential for the relationship’s health. Although it may be difficult, we should be able to share our sorrows and joys with our partners. This way, it will bring us closer.

6.  Family

One of the most important topics for couples to discuss is family. After all, they say, family is everything. So, you could start by asking your partner if they see themselves starting a family someday. Now, this is very essential to do because it gives you a clear picture of what they want in the future.

And this also helps you know whether you want the same thing as they want when it comes to starting a family. But, quite unfortunately, I have met people who began relationships and didn’t ask what their partner thought about starting a family. In the end, one accused the other partner of wasting their time.

So, what went wrong in that case? It is crystal clear that they never had that discussion, ultimately leading to broken hearts and accusations between both people. Nevertheless, this topic is too vital not to consider. So when you are with your partner next, and you are wondering what things to talk about in a relationship, you could have them talk about it.

Furthermore, this will give you a glimpse into the kind of family they want and their relationship with their family while growing up. Finally, the discussion will tell you whether or not they have a good relationship with their family and still do or otherwise.

In other words, it gives your partner a peek into what type of childhood you had and the type of family you are from. So this is a lover’s discussion topic to consider.

7.  Your Relationship

Occasionally, it is good to discuss your relationship with your partner. And there are several benefits to doing that. One is to get your partner’s view on how they feel about things. Or what they think should be done differently and why. In a nutshell, it is vital to talk about your relationship so you can know the way forward and how to progress positively.

To further bolster what was said earlier, one of the mistakes that some people make is to completely avoid discussing the areas in their relationship where they have problems.

They feel if they avoid that conversation, the problem will magically go away or resolve itself. But each time such a route is taken, it never solves the problem. So, it only means that every unresolved issue is an ongoing reality waiting to happen soon.

So as much as you talk about what is working well in your relationship, also talk about what isn’t. Most importantly, come up with solutions to areas that aren’t working as they should.

Talking openly about your relationship can ensure your relationship stays exciting and fresh. So these conversations with your boyfriend or girlfriend will tell the world you are interested in making the relationship work.

8.  Obstacles You Have Overcome Together

You should be at liberty to discuss anything with your significant other without second thoughts. Besides, not every conversation has to be earth-shattering. So, whatever the talk is about, one of the primary goals is to communicate with each other and exchange thoughts on the subject matter while still bonding.

As a couple, there must have been a time when your relationship was tested by the challenges life threw. For instance, there may have been a time when you were faced with an opportunity to cheat on your partner, but you refused and came out clean to them.

And then the both of you fought through the situation. Or maybe you guys faced challenges regarding lack of intimacy, lack of trust, or even coping with stress.

These are all things to discuss and recall how united you both were in facing those challenges. Sometimes, it might bring laughter back when you remember how nervous you both were. But ultimately, you both weathered the storm and came out winning.

9.  Your Values

Not every conversation with your partner has to be serious, but this is one essential topic you shouldn’t ignore. Sadly, many have experienced the bitter side of romantic relationships because they didn’t discuss this. Our values represent who we are and what we stand for. So, if you don’t discuss them with your partner, how would they know what you stand for?

Similarly, they let us know what our partner stands for. For instance, failure to know or understand the values of one’s partner has ended many relationships because they didn’t believe in or stand for the same thing. So, it is vital to talk about your values with one another because this will open you both to newer levels of understanding of each other.

Be free, and let your partner know about your priorities in life. I can’t stress this enough, but let your partner know what you value and what changes you’d like to make to enable you to live according to your values. It is vital to communicate these things to your partner.

10.  New Vacation Ideas

What better way to connect with your significant other than to plan your next vacation together? Most couples look forward to the planning part as much as the vacation.

They consider every aspect necessary as long as they are with their partner, which is terrific. So if you are thinking of what things to talk about in a relationship with your partner, how about you plan your next holiday together?

It is always extraordinary to bond with your partner and brainstorm where you’d like to visit next. So get to work together and plan your weekend getaways or vacations for weeks or months.

Besides, everyone could use a weekend getaway to refresh and connect more with their partner. The best part is that the holidays are always the highlights of an entire calendar year, so planning can make things less difficult for you.

11.  Things You’d Like To Try In Bed

things-to-talk-about-in-a-relationship

There are some partners who feel uncomfortable telling their significant other what they would like to do with them in bed. It is quite strange, but some people do not discuss such things with their partners. And there are several reasons why they do this. But as partners, you should be able to tell your wife or husband what you’d like to try in bed.

It is no news that for a relationship to be successful or blossom, sensual intimacy can’t be ruled out. This means that it is as vital as other forms of romantic gestures. So, I encourage you to talk about everything relating to this topic.

Interestingly, if you are wondering what a man might like in bed, my article, Things Men Like In Bed, will tell you more. That article will reveal many things on that topic, and you’ll be glad you read it.

12.  Your Past

The past can never be erased, but we can learn from it and move on. And our past does not have the power to define our future, so do not settle for that lie that says your past can determine your future.

However, there has been much debate about whether or not to talk about the past with one’s current partner. While some are for it, others are against it. But in any case, come out clean if you have anything you feel your partner should know.

Whatever it may be, the method of delivery is as important as the message itself. That said, your partner doesn’t need to know about every skeleton in your closet.
So, yes, you can talk about your past so long as it doesn’t make you uncomfortable. Also, your spouse should understand that if the stories weren’t as good as they expected, they should remember that that isn’t who you are anymore. Besides, every saint was once a sinner.

Your past includes your childhood, obstacles you’ve overcome, and other past experiences. But, shockingly, one’s past doesn’t have to be entirely negative. So, that means you can share how much you have learned and changed since then. These are some things to talk about in a relationship with your spouse.

13.  The Future

As much as many of us do not like talking about our past, others do not like discussing the future. Some say that it makes them anxious because they do not know what the future holds for them.

However, think of it this way: the future you once were worried about is the today you are in. Moreover, with careful planning and execution of those plans alongside focus, eventually, you will be fine.

What do you want to do in life? So, discuss these things with your spouse to get their view on what they think of the future, too. Interestingly, this will also tell you about their plans, and you will know if it includes you. So, discussing the future is an excellent place to begin if you are thinking about what things to talk about in a relationship.

14.  Likes And Dislikes

Many things ensure that a relationship stands firm, and one of those things is knowing your partner well enough to a point where you know what they like and dislike.

This helps you avoid doing what might offend them. However, partners can only know each other’s likes and dislikes when they talk about them.

Now, you will understand why it is said that knowledge is power. So that way, you know what things to say to your boyfriend or girlfriend that can make them angry or happy.

15.   Childhood Stories

It is always wonderful to go down memory lane and reminisce on the good old times when all you worried about was how to get chocolate and candy.

So one of the fantastic things to talk about in a relationship is your childhood stories. You know, those stories that made your childhood fun. It is also a good topic that can create a special connection between you and your partner, especially if there are similarities in your stories.

You and your partner can also discuss many other topics about love because relationships are about many things, including bonding and communicating with your spouse about different things in life.

So while you explore other discussion topics about love and relationships, remember that it doesn’t always have to be earth-shattering.
